Living a toxin free lifestyle is an extremely high priority for me. After watching my husband suffer through an environmental cancer, non Hodgkins lymphoma – twice – I learned the importance of what we put on our bodies and how much it impacts our health. Skin care and make up that was safe and effective was really hard to find.
The problem I’ve had over the years is that the natural or toxin free makeup never seemed to perform the way I wanted it to. Trust me when I tell you that I have done my research and due diligence on this because I’ve experimented, tested, and spent more money than I care to divulge. I’ve been living a green lifestyle since 2006 – and a very long time before the green beauty movement hit it’s stride.
Here was my beef with natural and toxin free makeup; lack of staying power.
If I’m going to spend a small fortune on high quality make up, it better stay on my face ALL DAY LONG. It was a challenging conquest to say the least. My workaround to this was to carry my makeup bag with me to work and reapply throughout the day which I felt was a little bit of a pain. And don’t even get me started on mascara. I have never, ever, ever, found a natural mascara that didn’t have me looking like a sad clown by the middle of the day. And if I laughed too hard or cried a bit, I became a Tammy Faye Baker knock-off in 15 seconds flat. This was at the time Klink was pretty sick with Cancer #2 so needless to say — I was crying a lot.
This was also about the same time that the EWG Skin Deep Database closed up shop. This was upsetting as it was the ONLY way of measuring the toxicity of a beauty or personal care product and I used it faithfully. Eventually, and thankfully, the database was up and running again and has now become the gold standard for those of us searching for safer beauty products. The database is also responsible for emerging beauty companies wanting to formulate with high quality and safe ingredients which, undoubtedly, created a virtual boom in the industry.
No staying power.
High performance and safe shouldn’t be mutually exclusive. Technology in manufacturing has grown by leaps and bounds the last few years and a chemist can now extract components from coconuts to create lather, turn cabbage into smoothing agents, and make mascara that stays put. Sometimes we need the combination of natural ingredients and safe synthetics in order for a product to perform and this isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Now, I know there’s a lot of purists out there that will balk at that statement, but as a former green beauty manufacturer, I can promise you that many synthetic ingredients are not only safe, but sometimes more effective than their natural counterparts. Why you may ask? Better absorption and penetration of active and natural ingredients, less chance of allergic reactions or skin irritation (think nut allergy), and longer shelf life.
I’ve been watching this company grow since it’s inception—cautiously optimistic about the performance—and hoping it would survive. When my husband, Klink, was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2015, I was spending my days working from home so I could be with him. I was only wearing makeup on occasion at that time and only for a few hours, so the performance of the natural brands didn’t bother me as much as it had in the past. But now? That’s all changed again. As my grief subsided, my social life improved. I started a new business and had more meetings outside the home. Then I sold my home after 25 years and started a new life on the road. I like the feeling of wearing makeup and always feel at my best when I have a little on. Even if it’s just to drive to the next campground!
The main reason I hadn’t signed on with Beauty Counter is because I’m not a big fan of network marketing. It’s just not my jam. I get it as a business model and I love that other people have found success with it, but again, it’s just not my thing. I like to build my own businesses and have control of my decisions.
But last fall, my friend Jennifer had a Beauty Counter party and I immediately fell in love with the efficacy of these products. The ingredients, the fact they use the safest ingredients, that’s a no brainer. They have the highest standards in the U.S. and their ingredient safety testing is, by far, the best I’ve come across. But what hit home for me was the performance.
Beauty Counter has staying power.
For the first time in over a decade, I can apply makeup and have it LAST ALL DAY. I can finally wear a “clean” mascara and not ever worry about looking like a raccoon after a few hours. And the lipsticks are amazing! Plus I feel good knowing none of the ingredients are compromising my health. This was a BIG win for me. I absolutely loved the makeup and I want to be able to share clean make-up with others. What I didn’t expect was to fall in love the skin care as much as I did. Another thing I also love is that I can get everything in one place. This is a bonus for me because being on the road full time, shipping can become a problem.
Another big sell for me was the packaging. Super innovative and thoughtful, allowing less preservatives to be used, while also eliminating the overuse of product. A little bit goes a looooong way.
So I caved. I signed up. And I’m super glad I did.
Beauty Counter is set up in a way that doesn’t force me to sell, recruit and/or build a team unless I choose to. I can simply share my love for the products and offer them to my peeps. No pressure. No hard sells. That totally fits my style.
Here are a few of my favorites and why I love them.
In the Makeup category and in no particular order:
Lipsticks: Both of these for different reasons. I am a huge lipstick junkie and typically won’t go anywhere without something on my lips. I’ll even wear it just hanging around the tiny house (Just for me:) They last longer than any other brand I’ve tried (and I’ve tried a LOT) and they don’t ever dry out my lips. The first image is the Sheer Lipstick and is great for daytime. The second image is Color Intense Lipstick and is more of a traditional lipstick and more opaque. Perfect for a night out on the town.
Brilliant Brow Gel: Best. Invention. Ever. Finally – a product that colors the HAIR and not the SKIN. Genius. Goes on like a dream and gives those of us with fine, light brows some definition and color while still looking natural. I use Light Neutral Beige which looks completely natural on my fine-haired, light brows.
Mascara: Total score here. Goes on DRY – not wet like many vegan/natural brands. I need to curl my eyelashes and because it applies dry, my curl doesn’t wilt when I apply it. It stays on all day and I NEVER have to check the mirror to see if it has smudged under my eyes. Two types – Lengthening or Volumizing. I’ve used both and like them equally.
In the Skin Care category and in no particular order:
Cleansing balm: This and the Overnight Resurfacing Peel (below) are my two favorite skin care products in this line. I apply it to my face, smooth it around with my fingers, then remove with a wet muslin cloth (provided). It cleanses without stripping my natural oils and I have even applied it as a leave-on after a sunburn or if my skin is really dehydrated. Bonus if you are camping or traveling because you need minimal water to use it.
Overnight Resurfacing Peel: In my opinion – miracle product. The peel exfoliates the outer layer of your skin while you sleep and leaves you with a fresh and rosy glow in the morning. I noticed my skin was firmer and smoother within the first few days and I had less flaking. If using in the morning, make sure to apply sunscreen if you’re going outside.
Calendula Lip Conditioner: Incredibly nourishing and uber calming for dry, chapped lips. Calendula is a healing plant and used in many healing balms. I use this morning and night and my lips are never dry.
