Using these apps can help you stay on track with your health goals.
Thank goodness for smartphones. They get a bad rap for the amount of time we spend on them, but honestly, if used correctly they can be our secret weapon for living a healthy and happy life. Below is a list of my favorite apps and how I use them to stay healthy.
Some of the links below are for Apple (sorry Google users) but you can usually find the same apps in Google Play.
Food and Nutrition Apps
Drink Water Reminder – One of my all-time favorites. This app definitely keeps me on track and reminds me to hydrate. I have it set to alert me at a quarter past the hour so it doesn’t get lost with calendar appointments and other alerts. I also have a rule that if I take one sip I take six instead to make sure I’m hitting my daily goal. It has a cute “drip” sound for the notification too. Cost – free.
Paprika Recipe Manager 3 – Paprika is an app that helps me organize my recipes, make meal plans, and create grocery lists. It has a built-in browser, I can save recipes from anywhere on the web. It also transfers across all of my devices so I can access the app at the grocery store if I need an ingredient list for a recipe.
Seafood Check – Mercury checker. This app helps us make healthier choices when we are purchasing seafood. Search the list to find the level of mercury content in any species.
Local Harvest – Not a current app but simply save to your home screen. Local Harvest connects people who want good food with the farmers that produce it. Find farmer’s markets, restaurants, CSA’s, grocery stores, co-ops, farm stands, and local farms. Excellent for when you are traveling!
FODMAP App – If you suffer from IBS or have a FODMAP intolerance, this app is a must. An easy guide to which foods are low and high in FODMAPs, low FODMAP recipes, and education on the FODMAP diet. I use this app on a daily basic when planning my meals.
Mind Body Apps
Mind Body App – This is a great app to use while traveling if you want to keep up your exercise routine. Find a yoga or pilates class, sign up for meditation or make an appointment with a chiropractor. This is a great app for finding wellness activities in your area.
Stand Up! – We all know that sitting is the new smoking. If you’re like me and spend hours on end staring at a computer screen, then this app is for you. This app will remind you to stand up and move at intervals throughout the day. Change the settings based on your preferences and move a little every hour.
Healthy Living App – Brought to you by the Environmental Working Group (EWG). The EWG scientists have rated more than 160K food, cosmetics, and cleaning products based on the health, safety, and transparency of their ingredients. Items are rated low, moderate, or high hazard. This is a really fun app to use to learn about the products you’re consuming. Just scan and learn!
Sleep Cycle – Good quality sleep is non-negotiable when it comes to good health. Sleep Cycle will help you fall asleep and wake you up gently. It analyzes the quality of your sleep as well as snoring and talking!
Insight Timer – This is an amazing and free meditation app that doesn’t disappoint. Over 130K guided meditations, a timer for those of us who like quiet meditations, stress management, free yoga, sleep tracks – you name it, this app has it. Paid workshops are available.
